MOC Dentist Visits Key Stage 1
This week, Year 2 and Foundation Stage 2 welcomed Mourany Orthodontic & Dental Center (MOC) to the school.
Dr. Norma Hamdan, Dr. Cerine Qaraqish and their team gave an excellent, detailed talk on dental care and the upkeep of our teeth and gums. The children all really enjoyed the fun, interactive presentation, and the serious message MOC were putting across, seemed to be taken in by all. They were shown a slide presentation of different food and drinks and had to give a thumbs up if the food or drink was good for your teeth and a thumbs down if it was bad.
For example: Milk? Thumbs Up! Together with water, milk is the best drink when it comes to your teeth. It’s rich in calcium and other important elements. Milk also lowers the acid levels in the mouth, which helps fighting tooth decay.
Carbonated soft drinks? Thumbs down! These drinks are the leading source of added sugar among children and teens. Besides being loaded with sugar, most soft drinks contain phosphoric and citric acids that wear away tooth enamel.
The children were reminded to brush their teeth 3 times a day, 30 to 60 minutes after they’ve eaten. They were also told that they should floss their teeth once a day, something that many people neglect to do.
Some of the children were given the opportunity to sit in the dentist’s chair and have their teeth and gums examined. Thankfully, most of children have been keeping their teeth very healthy, but a couple of them had problems, so hopefully they’ll go home and make their parents aware that they need to visit the dentist soon.
Thanks must go to Ms Fadia Samrani, Ms Charlene van Wyk and Ms Charmaine Bakker for organising the morning and the team from MOC for such an interesting talk.
